A School-based Program
where specially trained teaching artists train
students in merenge, foxtrot, rumba,
tango, swing, waltz and more.

The Dancing Classroom Philly program is a school-based program that occurs within the school day and is designed to integrate with the school curriculum. The program runs for 10 weeks, with twice weekly classes of 45 minutes each. Classes are taught by our specially trained teaching artists who teach merengue, foxtrot, rumba, tango, swing, and waltz in addition to “sugar dances” such as cha cha slide, macarena, and stomp. Currently, we serve only 5th grades and all 5th grades within a participating school must take the program. The classroom teacher is required to participate in the program.
The Health Component
In conjunction with The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), we are piloting a health curriculum of mini health lessons to coordinate with our dance classes. A group of resident physicians from CHOP reach out to one school per semester to present a series of five health lessons prior to the dance lesson. The children learn about nutrition, the brain, lungs, heart, and musculoskeletal system.
